未料，指考前最後一次模擬考，當跟他差不多用功的同學考到96.8高分時，高宣凱卻僅有28分，「那時候真的蠻沮喪的！」但想到距離大考還有2、3個月，於是重新振作，先調整生理時鐘，每天都在早上算數學，以配合正式考試時間；同時還窩在房間裡，假裝身邊有個「什麼都不懂」的學生，一一講解觀念給他聽。

高宣凱說，各個科目中，從小他對數學最排斥，尤其到了高中，課程難度大幅提升，高一上學期幾乎都考40分以下，高一下請了家教並配合學校教學進度後，才慢慢拉到及格邊緣。

數學大黑馬！台北市麗山高中學生高宣凱（見右圖，麗山高中提供）一向不擅長數學，高一接連幾次段考不及格，雖接下來慢慢拉高成績，頂多也只到6、70分，尤其指考前最後一次模擬考，更只拿到28分；不過，他靠著「自言自語」釐清觀念，最後一舉拿到90.8分，並錄取台大法律系。
